Transformers : The Review

"You have to understand" I explained to Maria "We're here because my ten year old self would never forgive me for not seeing this". Maria did understand, but given her loathing of action films that don't include James Bond the question was why was she there? I only found out the Machiavellian intent at the end of the movie - I am now obliged to see at least one sickly sweet romantic comedy. Ah well.

Now I'd like to report that Transformers is a deep and meaningful film, that the tagline 'our world, their war' refers to a cleverly constructed parallel with America's occupation of Iraq; with the Autobots spouting about the need to protect mankind while blowing up ever more buildings highlighting the gap between rhetoric and action. Or perhaps it is a thought provoking piece on the nature of mans relationship with machines, are we taking anthropomorphism too far?

None of you will be surprised to learn that Transformers is not a deep and meaningful film. On the other hand, there were some surprises. The audience applauded, twice! Once at the end, and once at the words "I am Optimus Prime". There was spontaneous yelling and cheering as if we'd all gone back to being ten years old and the big red truck was really up there on the big screen as officially the coolest thing EVOR. Now it might have been that the crowd at the Tushinski was a bit beered up (it was the 9:30 showing) but I like to think that everyone had brought their younger ten year old self along, and ten year olds really like big robots that blow stuff up and change into cars.

So how is the film as a film?
